WHAT IS MEDIA LITERACY?
Media Literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate, and communicate information in a variety of forms and formats. It is about teaching critical thinking beyond the traditional literacies of reading and writing. (DeAbreu, 13).

5 CORE CONCEPTS OF MEDIA LITERACY
- All media messages are constructed
- Media messages are constructed using a creative language with it's own rules
- Different people experience the same message differently
- Media have embedded values/ points of view
- Most media messages are organized to gain profit and power
- It is vitally important, as teachers, that we address/incorporate these core concepts in our lessons on Media Literacy
"Schools need to begin by looking at how they bring in the technologies that students are using...for their personal use and bridge opportunities for learning in the classroom" (DeAbreu, 1)
* * Teachers need to acknowledge that media are also texts
-the traditional models of education are not longer applicable
-there has been a rapid change in technology over the past ten years and schools were unprepared for such a drastic culture shift
-as aspiring teachers we MUST educate ourselves on how to close this gap between the classroom and culture. Creating opportunities for students to learn within the media framework that they are familiar with will only serve to fuel their intellectual curiosity.
"It is not enough to teach Reading, Writing, and Arithmetic....to be literate in other skill sets is most important" - UNESCO Representative Alton Grizzle (DeAbreu, 4)

" The value of reviewing what our children are watching and learning has also grown in importance and urgency" (DeAbreu, 1)
-this is why teachers MUST teach critical thinking skills from an early age
"Teaching Students to analyze media messages [will also help] them become better readers of print material" (Baker, 5)
